The Garden Valley School Division will take further steps to recognize that the division exists on Treaty One land.

Board Chair Laurie Dyck says they have approved two Treaty One acknowledgment statements for schools to use during special events or significant times throughout the school year.

Dyck says the statements will be read at the discretion of the administration of each school. She says it's best that they are doing what works best for their schools, and making it meaningful for their students.

"Our students are learning a lot about truth and reconciliation in their curriculum at school. It's a way of acknowledging the past and moving forward, and hoping as this language, as we hear this about talk about it, that it's a way for us to become aware and acknowledge it."

About a year ago, Dyck notes the division also hung up a plaque in their board room acknowledging GVSD exists on Treaty One land.
