The Garden Valley School Division is creating a new plaque to recognize they operate on Treaty No. 1 land.

Board Chair Laurie Dyck explains it's part of the greater awareness of recent reconciliation efforts in Canada between government and Aboriginal peoples.

"It's one of those small pieces in the reconciliation process," she says.

The school division operates on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe people.

Treaty No. 1 was negotiated and entered into nearly 146 years ago at Lower Fort Garry.

Communities sharing the obligations and benefits of Treaty No. 1 include Winnipeg, Brandon, Portage La Prairie, Selkirk, Steinbach, Lundar, Grand Beach, Emerson, and Winkler among others.

Dyck notes the project is in keeping with students' education on treaties and residential schools, "to help affirm, yes we are part of this country together."
