A much needed service will once again be available to City of Winkler residents. A Handi-Van, which was donated anonymously, will be making transportation for people with mobility issues easier and more convenient later this summer.

"We talked to Morden and there is a demand," said Handi-Van Board Chair Mike Chute. "They do pick people up in Winkler and transport them. Now it'll cost them less because we have a local option."

Senior Centre Director Nettie Dyck explained they get a lot of calls from people in need of transporation, but prior to receiving their own Handi-Van they were directing them to Morden's service.

"It's exciting that we can meet that need," Dyck said.

Chute explains the biggest operating cost is paying for a driver.

"The numbers are such that we think we can break even on this project," he explained.

If the Handi-Van budget were to end in the red at year's end, the City of Winkler has said they'll cover the shortcoming. Chute noted having this support from the City has also opened up some grant opportunities to help cover the costs.
