As the days become shorter and the sun becomes more of a memory, workers and students alike turn to caffeine as a means to make it through the day.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system causing increased alertness. That alertness helps reduce tiredness, and gives people a temporary "boost" of energy, and can last upwards of six hours.

Like any drug, people who regularly consume caffeinated items will develop less sensitivity to it, and more is needed to achieve the same effects it once had.

According to Registered Dietician Kerby Sylvester, a moderated amount of caffeine intake poses no risk to a healthy adult. However, too much does have adverse effects on the body.

"It can cause headaches, irritability, nervousness, rapid heart rate, and can disrupt sleep patterns. Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others, and less than the recommended intake will increase these symptoms."

Kids and adolescents are particularity sensitive to caffeine. Sylvester says sleep is incredibly crucial for learning and development, so parents and individuals need to be careful when consuming this drug.

Health Canada recommends having a daily caffeine intake of no more than 300mg, an amount of around three to four 8 ounce cups of regular brewed coffee.

The recommendations for children and teens are even lower; with an average teen weighing approximately 120 lbs, the limit is less than 135mg.

"Energy drinks are newer to the market, but we're seeing them grow in popularity. Energy drinks aren't recommended for children, not only because of the high caffeine content but the other ingredients such as high amounts of added sugar. These drinks also have the potential to replace healthy foods and beverages that provide essential nutrients."

She adds many people and students turn to caffeine as a quick fix to staying awake. However, a consistent sleep pattern and consistent regular meals will provide long-lasting energy and will increase the ability to focus and concentrate.

Studies have also shown movement breaks are another method of increasing energy and reducing stress, boost brain function, and enhance productivity.
