It was a busy day for the Letellier Fire Department on Wednesday.

Crews responded to a mutual aid call in the Dominion City area where a grass fire broke out in those gusty winds.

Fire Chief Jean Guy Chartier says that's when things got a little crazy.

"While we were there, we got called out to a structure fire in our municipality (Montcalm), so we split our crews where some stayed with the grass fire and the other crew went to the structure fire. Once we got there, we got dispatched to a third fire, a grass fire, about four miles south of that location. At that point we called in mutual aid to several other departments."

That mutual aid call included fire crews from St. Jean, Dominion City, Emerson, Altona and Winkler.

Chartier says fighting grass fires in rural areas where there is no river or body of water requires the assistance of fire departments in neighbouring communities.

"We needed to call in extra guys just for water, so when we called in Altona and Winkler we wanted their water tankers, and that's what they brought us."

Chartier says the grass fires were caused by sparks generated from hydro lines that were touching trees in yesterday's high winds.

The cause of the structure fire, which was a two door garage, is still under investigation. That building was destroyed.
