A home in the RM of Piney was destroyed by fire Wednesday night. Piney Fire Chief Harold Grawberger says they got the alarm just before 8:00 p.m. for a residence southeast of Sundown, one mile north of the Canada-U.S. border. He describes what they found when they arrived on the scene.

"The building was totally down already. The owner wasn't home. His mother lives on the same property, in a trailer house, but she didn't notice it until it was pretty much destroyed. By the time we got there, the building was already down."

He adds firefighters focused on securing the perimeter around the home to prevent the fire from spreading to a woodpile and nearby trees.

The homeowner was in the process of putting an addition on the house.

Grawberger says there were no injuries, however a pet dog perished in the blaze. We have also been told by the family that a pet hamster died. He adds the Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating the cause. The loss is estimated at $250,000-$300.000.

The family does have insurance.
