Water is flowing over the west end of Pembina Ave. in Winkler near the cemetery to a depth of around three inches, and it's expected to rise.

The dike that is meant to redirect spring melt water around Winkler is full of snow and ice causing water to flood over ditches and culverts and onto the road.

"We have a lot of water coming in, not just from the creek, but also from the ditches down Pembina," said Peter Froese, director of works and operations for the City of Winkler.

"People should be careful when crossing through that."

The road currently flooding is actually designed to be underwater, directing it away from town. It's meant to be at a lower elevation so water can flow over.

The water is coming down all the way from the escarpment where there's a lot snow and ice still sitting around.

"As the weather improves, I think there will be more water coming across," said Froese.

For the next week or two, the flooding is expected to continue. If the level reaches between six to 12 inches, the road will be closed.

He warns people to be careful driving through the water and to stay between the traffic cones.
