The intersection at PTH 32 and Hespler avenue, near Schanzenfeld is going to be receiving a facelift this summer. This project was announced by the Minster of Infrastructure Blaine Pedersen last week at a news conference in Brandon.

"The RM of Stanley has enjoyed a very good working relationship with the department of highways. This is another example of two levels of government working together and moving forward with projects that are important to the community from both an infrastructure and a public safety perspective," said Stanley Reeve Morris Olafson.

Olafson stated this has been one of the most dangerous intersections in Southern Manitoba and have wanted to improve safety at this intersection for quite some time.

"Working with the Highway Department, as a cost sharing agreement, we are putting in $125,000 into that corner, because we feel strongly enough about it to get it done," said Olafson.

The overall cost of the project, Olafson estimates could cost around $400,000-$500,000 but the tenders haven't been awarded yet. He added once tendering is complete the Provincial government will be working with the RM to put a cost-sharing agreement in place.

One part of the project will see roughly 120 metres shoulder being paved with a paved access connecting PTH 32 to a new concrete road servicing a strip of new commercial lots about a half mile north of the village. Also with safety in mind, there will be a turning lane constructed for southbound traffic on the west side of the intersection and a paved shoulder on the east side for northbound traffic.

According to Olafson this is a step in the right direction to make this intersection a lot safer for motorists around the area.
