Altona Police Service recently contacted the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) after an allegation one of their officers pointed a firearm at an individual being transported from Altona to Winnipeg to 2015.

Last month, Altona Police became aware that an officer allegedly pointed a firearm at a female youth during a transport to Winnipeg. The alleged incident is said to have taken place in December 2015.

Altona Police Service immediately contacted the IIU to advise of the allegation and, in consultation with the IIU, then gathered additional information. On November 26, the IIU received formal notification of the incident from Altona Police Service.

Although there were no injuries sustained in this matter, the IIU civilian director has determined it is in the public interest for the unit to investigate, in accordance with Section 75 (1) of The Police Services Act.

Altona Police Chief Perry Batchelor said in a release the officer at the center of the investigation remains on full duties and is being supported through the investigation process.
