The artistic talents of area high school students is on display this week at Gallery in the Park in Altona.

Russel Schaubroeck and Kayla Grettum are just two of the many students from Morden, Winkler and Altona featured at the 5th annual Student Art Show which opened to the public this past weekend.

The duo described the pieces they submitted for exhibition.

Schaubroeck said what he enjoys most about the opportunity to be artistic is the experience of creating something that in the end, looks good. "It gives you a good feeling."

Grettum added that various creative medium allows her to express thoughts and feelings.

"I just like creating my own words in a painting because I'm not expressive through my own actions or my words, but I can definitely be expressive in my work."

The pair also had the opportunity to curate the show, an experience both say they found challenging and rewarding. The opportunity came via local artist Margruite Krahn, and a Creative Manitoba mentorship program

"It was very interesting," said Schaubroeck, adding it was a little difficult to find places for some of the paintings. "It makes you think about what looks good together, and it makes you think about a story because the whole point is to tell a whole story by arranging the paintings in different ways."

Grettum agreed that the hardest part of the job was getting started.

"You want to tell a story but you also want the audience to think of their own stories as well."

The Student Art Show runs until Sunday, May 13.
