Friday night saw a full Winkler Arts and Culture Centre as a unique exhibit was unveiled for the community to see.

Faces of Winkler, a month-long display of 12 people from Winkler, opened Friday to an energetic crowd. The idea was to pair each resident with a local photographer and an artist. The artist and photographer would present a special piece about that resident, and the photographer would hang a portrait along with the display. Some of the people tapped included, Winkler mayor Martin Harder and city manager Barb Dyck.

"I'm amazed at all the artists here," said Dyck, "who have portrayed each individual in such a way that speaks of their character and not just a portrait."

There was a sense of pride and humility from the featured faces and a sense of pride and anticipation from the photographers and artists who were hoping they captured the essence of their subjects.

Dyck was paired with local artist Anne Klassen who said she prayed she'd properly capture who Dyck was in her work. Dyck happily admits that she succeeded.

Other reactions were varied: tears, laughter and awe of the depth of meaning to each piece and person that contributed to the exhibit.  Each story told of connection between people and community.

"It was a great experience," said Klassen, "I haven't done anything like this for years."

The exhibit is open free of charge to the public until Feb. 3.
