John Klassen first intended to build a crokinole board to play with his family and friends, but as he worked on it, his idea shifted onto a new idea: merging crokinole with golf into a new game which he simply calls a "Golf Board".

"Everyone talks about doing something, making something new. I figured, 'what can it hurt'," said Klassen.

Klassen presented his creation to some friends to watch them play-test his invention, quickly he had several orders for new boards.

"They were laughing and having lots of fun," Klassen said, adding how suprised he was that people liked it. So, he started making more.

Soon, Klassen had 50 boards and began selling them locally.

Over the years, he's changed the original concept quite a lot until he settled on the game's current form.

"I think they're pretty well where we want them," Klassen said about his game.

Sales have been good, according to Klassen, which he attributes to the popularity of crokinole.

"Majority of people like them a lot," he said.

The game has sparked interest in young people, not just those who've played crokinole for 50 years.

"Everyone's on the same level," said Klassen. "All you need to know is how to flick the disk, so anybody can do it."

Klassen started building the board in the year 2000, coming up with the original prototype and playtesting it with friends. Over the next 17 years, he's married and started a family, which halted his Golf Board production. Recently, however, he's picked up the hobby again, hoping people will give his game a try.

The game is an adaptation of crokinole. Klassen calls it "crokinole on steroids".
