School librarians like Liz Stobbe spend many hours to create an environment which enhances the reading experience for students. Now she's receiving an award for her work.

Manitoba School Library Association awards a librarian as Library Support Staff of the Year, an award which recognizes dedication to promoting reading in schools.

Stobbe, the Northlands Parkway Colligate librarian, says she was surprised to hear she had been recognized for the award.

"I had no idea I was even nominated, so I was absolutely shocked. I was absolutely humbled and I was very honoured."

Stobbe was nominated by NPC Vice Principal Jeff Osinski, for her dedication and commitment to promoting reading at the school. Stobbe is the first librarian outside Winnipeg to receive this award.

Her desire for reading has shown in her work; she regularly creates an environment in which students are excited to read with raffles, contests, and incentives to make learning fun for students.

"I have a promotional budget that I put aside and I buy prizes for the students who win these contests. You kind of pull them into the library, and they start looking around."

Stobbe was recognized for her collaborative efforts with teaching staff, sourcing curriculum support materials that teachers need to support student achievements, as well as ongoing communication to support a variety of literacy programs and initiatives.

Her "get caught reading" coupons, comic strip contests, and other events have helped nurture a love for reading in students increasing student readership and visits to the library.

She also plays a key role in planning and developing the collection and setting up the library of NPC. Stobbe has continued to grow the collection and order materials that meet the needs of students and has created a warm and inviting library environment for both staff and students to enjoy.
