Members of the Altona Police Service will be amping up enforcement at local railway crossings.

Police Chief Perry Batchelor says the decision is the result of too many complaints of motorists ignoring the rules and proceeding when unsafe to do so. In fact, Bunge Canada has reported several near-misses between vehicles and trains that are coming and going from the plant in town.

Batchelor explains that disregarding a flag person stationed at a rail crossing is a Highway Traffic Act offence that comes with a $299 fine plus demerits.

He encourages all motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to please drive safely and pay attention to all traffic control devices and warnings.
