A local resident may be the victim of identity theft.

Winkler Police were notified January 31 that a female believes her ex-boyfriend stole her Social Insurance Number and used it to rent an apartment in Ontario.

The victim received a phone call from a collection agency that claimed she owed over $800 for an outstanding utility bill.

Police say the investigation is on-going.

Below is the Winkler Police report for January 29 to February 4:

January 29 – Police were advised of a 16-year-old female that had breached her probation-ordered curfew. Police attended her residence and arrested her for Breach Probation. She was transported to the Winkler Police Service and later released on an Appearance Notice.

January 30 – Police were dispatched to Superstore regarding a theft involving a male and female who were apprehended by loss prevention personnel. Police arrested the 18-year-old male resident of Winkler for Theft Under $5000 and Breach Probation. He was later released on a Promise to Appear with conditions. The 16-year-old female resident of Winkler was arrested for Theft Under $5000 and will be dealt with through Alternative Measures.

January 31 – A noise complaint was received from a resident of 7th Street South who advised that her neighbor was playing loud music and has done this on multiple occasions. Police attended and spoke with the subject of the complaint who agreed to turn down the music.

Police received a complaint from a male who advised that an individual known to him, had threatened him and his family. Police attended the accused’s home and arrested him for Utter Threats. He was transported to the Winkler Police Service and later released on a Promise to Appear with conditions.

February 1 – Police conducted a curfew check on a male and learned he was not at home as required. Police later located and arrested the accused for Breach Recognizance (x2). The 27-year-old male was remanded into custody to appear in Provincial Court on February 5th, 2018.

Police received a report of a female who was assaulted and threatened inside an apartment on Imperial Bay. The female was prevented from leaving the male’s apartment while he made several advances on her. The female struck the male in an attempt to escape at which time the male struck her in the neck. She was then able to leave the apartment and contact police. The 46-year-old accused was later located and arrested for Assault and Utter Threats. He was released on a Promise to Appear with conditions.

February 4 – Police were dispatched to a residence on Stanley Avenue regarding a female that was assaulted by her husband while their three children were present in the home. Police attended and found the husband to be intoxicated and uncooperative. Police arrested the 39-year-old male for Assault and Utter Threats and transported him to the Winkler Police Service where he was later released once sober on a Promise to Appear with conditions.
