Manitoba's Progressive Conservative government is set to deliver a budget next week which is expected to take aim at reducing the province's deficit.

In an effort to show fiscal restraint, Tory MLAs have voluntarily accepted a wage freeze for the duration of the Pallister government's first term in office.

Premier Brian Pallister says his party is trying to send a message.

"The message is 'start with us.' We're going to be asking all the government employees to do the same, so we are freezing all our wages here, which it's the responsible thing to do and we're trying to set the proper tone at the top or our organization."

Pallister adds, he has also cut his office budget by 41 percent compared to former Premier Greg Selinger's office budget, and the size of cabinet has been reduced by 30 per cent, all in an effort cut costs at the top.

"We're carrying that effort right across government, whether it's the crown corporations like Hydro and MPI, to trim at the top of those organizations and find savings there, because that's where it starts and I think it's the right message to send."
