Manitoba Hydro is working to shed some surplus properties. It's been over three years since the crown corporation closed its offices in Carman and Altona, centralizing services out of the Morden location. Since then, councils for the two communities have been waiting to see what the future held for the vacant buildings.

In particular, Carman Council has been eager to see the empty property along Highway 13 put up for sale, hoping for a business opportunity to sweep in and occupy the prime local real estate.

Scott Powell, Director of Corporate Communications for Manitoba Hydro, recently had some good news to share.

"In the case of the Carman property, we are selling the land, the fenced-in compound and the district office building that's on that site. We currently have the property listed

The old MB Hydro building in Carman has been put up for sale three years after the office was closedwith a local realtor and we're just waiting to see if anybody is interested in the property, but it is up for sale."

As for the Altona property along Industrial Drive, Powell said it too will soon be put up for sale.

"We are still carrying out some required environmental work at the Altona office and once that's complete we'll be looking to sell the land and the district office building there as well."

He added there has been some interest in this site and Hydro has noted that in the file.

"Once our environmental work is completed and we get it listed, it gives us a starting point to see if anybody is interested in purchasing that property."

Altona Mayor Melvin Klassen says Council has expressed interest in the lot and looks forward to seeing the details of the future sale.
