Construction on a new gym for Altona's high school is a bit behind schedule.

Border Land School Division Superintendent, Krista Curry, explained some shifting in the existing building set progress back a few weeks.

"We have very silty, sandy soil and so we're just running some piles so we can support that and make sure it doesn't shift anymore."

A link will connect the new 12,918 square foot gym to the current 4,800 sq. ft. facility. Plans include 6,500 square feet of new gymnasium space with a 24 ft. high ceiling plus 1,000 sq. ft. of adjacent gym space, additional change rooms, storage, office space and a 1,000 sq. ft. fitness room.

Despite the small setback, Curry said a lot of decisions are being made about the finishings inside the gym.

"They're doing wiring (right now) so we're spending a lot of time looking at sound systems."

She expects that once the nice spring weather arrives, construction will be full speed ahead.

The gym is expected to be ready for use in September.
