With a full slate of 60 entries both days and a sold-out crowd, the 15th annual Legends Charity Airport Drag Races was a success this weekend, says Don Elias, race committee co-chair.

The event saw a handful of special features as well, including mini dragster races, two shows with a 7500 horsepower bio diesel jet car, racing sleds, and drag bikes.

Seven-year-old Skylar Klassen of Winkler was one of the two participants in the mini dragster race. She began racing in 2016 after watching junior dragster races at a competition in Fargo. Since then, she has competed in multiple events and even captured her first win earlier this summer.

Klassen said her favourite thing about racing is the speed, and advises anyone who is looking to start racing to practise lots.

For Reid, the other participant, the apple does not fall far from the tree. He said he was inspired to start racing after watching his dad compete.

“It’s kind of weird because you’re just driving a car at full speed down an open track, pretty much,” he said.

He added his favourite thing about racing is encouraging others to have fun.

A portion of the proceeds raised this weekend will be donated to the Genesis House in Winkler and the South Central Cancer Resource. To date, around $200,000 has been raised, said Elias. This year’s total has not yet been calculated.
