This week Cliff Graydon, MLA for Emerson, proposed a private member's resolution to raise awareness of Lyme disease.

"The proposal of the resolution was to make the month of May 'Lyme Awareness Month'... and also to make more people aware of the impact of Lyme Disease," said Graydon.

He wants increased education about Lyme disease to include how it's contracted, what the symptoms are, how to treat it, and what can happen if left untreated.

"Under the NDP government they did some talking in the right direction but they didn't do any action in that direction... We were disappointed that the NDP spoke the resolution out... a number of them told a story about knowing someone that had Lyme disease."

Graydon said there are now plans to take action, in the form of a Lyme Disease clinic.

"It won't be a brick and mortar clinic, but it will have (trained) people specific to Lyme Disease," said Graydon. "The people will be based in Winnipeg."

Currently, Graydon does not have a timeline for when the clinic would be open.

"It's in the works of being put together, and you want to do it right so you cover all your bases," he said.

Lyme is best treated in the early stages of infection with antibiotics, but diagnosing and treating the disease is difficult.

"In 2014 there was a veterinarian in St. Pierre that diagnosed 40 cases of Lyme in dogs, and yet we didn't do that many on people in the province because the health care system was not paying attention," Graydon said.

He adds he's confident the proposed resolution will be passed.
