Local residents explored the multifaceted topic of Judaism and Israel in the 21st Century during the latest Diversitas event held in Morden. The on-going lecture series has made a name for itself in the region for boldly delving into complicated and controversial issues.

Dr. Ruth Ashrafi, Judaic Studies Adviser at the Gray Academy of Jewish Education, was invited to discuss Judaism and modern Israel, as well as the Israel/Palestine conflict.

"Jews and their relation to Israel are extremely topical," explains Dr. Ashrafi. "I think it's very important for people to become informed with what is going on in the land of Israel."

She notes some of the latest headlines centred on riots which took place in Jerusalem July 26th, as Palestinians held a "Day of Rage" over the controversial Israeli security measures at the Temple Mount.

Peter Cantelon, Founder of Diversitas and Executive Director at the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre, says Diversitas was created as a way to educate people on subjects and views they normally wouldn't be exposed to.

"We have such a monolithic-Christian culture in this region. That culture has a very specific kind of perspective when it comes to Israel," he says. "We weave theology into our political opinions, so let's bring in someone who has actually lived in Israel, who is a scholar, who is Jewish, let's bring her in to speak about the things we know so much about."

Dozens of people attended the presentation to learn more about the subject, and to ask questions and express their own opinions.

"The presentation was so full, you could see Ruth try to give as much information as possible," Cantelon added, saying the Q and A sessions are always filled with passionate dialogue and great questions.

He notes if he hadn't cut the time short, the session could have gone all night.

Diversitas will hold its next session on September 27th with Dorota Blumczynska, Executive Director of the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba Inc (IRCOM).

Blumcyznska will speak on Immigrants, Refugees and Manitoba.
