Police were called to a Morden school last week after reports of a suspicious male harrassing students. Morden Police Service says the man was following students and making inappropriate comments.

Officers were provided a description of the suspect and says they were familiar with the man from prior encounters.

Police found the man at his home and confirmed he was involved with the incident at the school. The suspect was cautioned for his behaviour and no charges were laid.

May 7th, 2018

Police received a report of a hit and run to a vehicle that occurred in the Giant Tiger parking lot. The driver returned to his vehicle, a 2010 grey Toyota Rav 4, and observed damage to the rear driver side fender. Anyone with information regarding this incident are asked to call the Morden Police Service at 822-4900, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, submit a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com or text “TIPMAN” plus your message to CRIMES (274637).

 

May 8th, 2018

At 1:00 am, members of the Morden Police Service were on patrol and located a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot by the Morden spillway. Police conducted a traffic stop and detected a strong smell of burnt marihuana coming from the vehicle. Police spoke with the driver of the vehicle and located a quantity of marihuana. The occupants of the vehicle were subsequently arrested and searched. Police located numerous drug related items which were seized for destruction. Police conducted checks on the passengers and discovered one of the individuals had an outstanding warrant of arrest for failing to attend court. The 20-year-old male resident of Plum Coulee was arrested on the strength of the warrant and turned over to members of the Winkler Police Service. The driver of the vehicle was given a warning for possession of marihuana and relinquished the drugs for destruction.

 

May 10th, 2018

Police were called this morning to a residence in Morden to assist in removing the callers ex-husband. Police responded to the residence and learned that the homeowner had a Family Court Order for the male suspect not to be at the residence. The male suspect was cooperative with police and given a ride to another location. Later in the day, police received a call for the same male suspect and he was arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. The suspect was lodged in police cells until sober and released later in the day. Police then received a third call from the homeowner that the suspect had returned to the residence. The male was arrested on the strength of the court order and lodged in police cells. The accused was released from police custody later in the evening and charges are pending.

 

May 11th, 2018

Police were dispatched to a residence in Morden with regard to harassing phone calls. Police spoke with the victim who explained that she has been receiving numerous phone calls and messages from an unwanted male. While police were at the victim’s residence, the phone rang and police answered the phone. Police spoke with the male and advised him that the victim did not want him contacting her anymore. The male agreed to stop calling her and police departed the residence.

 

May 12th, 2018

Police were dispatched to a residence in Morden to deal with a family dispute. Police attended and discovered the agitated family member already outside the residence. Police learned that the suspect had lost his temper and threw some items around the house. Police spoke with all parties and mediated the situation. The family was able to reach an agreement and no charges were laid in this incident.

May 12th, 2018

Police received a 911 call to a residence for a domestic dispute between a husband and wife. Police arrived on scene and observed one of the parties to be very distraught. Police learned that no assaults had taken place and were able to mediate the situation without charges. Alcohol was a factor in this incident.

May 12th, 2018

While on general patrol, police could hear yelling and screaming coming from a local motel parking lot. As police responded, they could hear the sound of breaking glass. Police attended to the area and located the female suspect who was known to police from prior incidents. The suspect was barefoot, had blood on her hands and was continuing to yell and bang on the window to one of the motel rooms. As police approached, the female attempted to flee past police on foot but was taken into police custody. Police observed the suspect to be intoxicated and she continued to be uncooperative with police. Police located the occupant of the Motel room and discovered there to be a No contact or communication order between the suspect and the occupant of the room. The motel owners did not wish to proceed with charges for causing damage to the Motel. As a result, Chelsea Hynes of Morden has been charged with two counts of breaching her undertaking for consuming liquor and for breaching her no contact or communication order with the victim. The accused was an undertaking due to previous charges with this same victim. The accused has now been released on a recognizance for a court date in May.

During this reporting period, members of the Morden Police Service issued 5 Provincial Offence Notices. The charges included: 2 for Using a Cellular Device while Driving a Vehicle, 2 for Failing to Stop at a red light, and one charge for Failing to yield right of way for a pedestrian at a pedestrian corridor.

Police would like to remind the public that there is a total fire ban in effect for the City of Morden. This ban includes all backyard fire pits and will remain in effect until further notice. Please check the Morden Fire and Rescue website for updates on this ban.
