Morden Police engaged in a pair of high-speed pursuits last weekend, both ending in charges.

On Saturday, June 23 police were on patrol just after midnight near the Morden Dam on Spillway Dr. when they noticed a vehicle parked next to the golf course maintenance shed.

Police activated emergency lights, though upon approaching the vehicle's engine started. Police yelled to the driver to turn the vehicle off but the vehicle accelerated away, spraying gravel at police and swerving back and forth on the roadway.

Police pursued the vehicle for approximately 400 meters with the siren activated, when it suddenly came to a stop. Police performed a high-risk takedown, removing the driver and passenger from the vehicle. The driver was arrested for flight from a peace officer and transported back to the police station.

A statement was obtained from the driver and passenger admitting to knowing it was the police and attempting to flee. The 20-year-old driver from Morden is charged with one count of Flight from a Peace Officer and will be appearing in Morden Provincial Court in August.

The following day, Sunday, June 23 police received a call from an off-duty officer about a suspected impaired driver.

The vehicle had been travelling west on Thornhill St. into Morden and was seen reaching speeds of 120 km/h before hitting a curb and nearly colliding with a motorcycle. Police located the suspect vehicle near 7th St. and was pulled over.

While speaking with the driver, officers noticed he had an odour of liquor on his breath, red eyes, and was unsteady on his feet when outside the vehicle. A demand was made to provide a sample of his breath on a roadside screening device that resulted in a fail. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and further testing resulted in two readings of 230 mg%. The driver was charged with Impaired Driving, Driving over .08, and the vehicle was impounded for 60 days. He will be appearing in Morden Provincial Court in August.
