The Manitoba Youth Job Centre (MYJC) in Winkler is one of 40 locations across the province and is open again for the summer. Caitlyn Haney is the 2018 Youth Engagement Leader and is ready to help local students and youth get ready for the summer.

For anyone who has ever done jobs for their grandparents over the summer break, you’ve already had a taste of what the Odd Job Squad does. Anyone age 12-16 is provided with supervised work and volunteer opportunities within the community. It’s great for people that need a few more years and a bit more experience before starting a full-time job.

Shauna Penner is the Morden and area MYJC Youth Engagement Leader for the summer. Having just completed her fourth year of study at Providence University College she's excited to be back in the community.

"If you are seeking full-time, part-time, or casual employment, need help with your resume, or want to expand your job search or interview skills, just drop by and we will be happy to work with you."

Anyone age 16-29 can also be directly connected with employers in the area who are ready to give you valuable work skills and experience. The MYJC can help clients prepare by teaching you how to write resumes and cover letters, learn how to be a good interviewee, and decipher the mystery of student loans.

It is easy to feel under-qualified for a job. Haney notes, "the whole process is very time consuming and can actually be very discouraging to youth when they don’t know exactly what employers are looking for."

Haney gets the lucky job of being the middle-person between employers and potential employees, and can be "an extra hand when looking for jobs," she said. Businesses can tell her exactly what they are looking for in applicants so she can refer qualified youth directly back to the business.

"The more experience you have with the different types of jobs, can actually help build a very impressive resume for future employers," said Haney.
