The constituency of Morris will disappear from Manitoba's political map in the next provincial election after almost 140 years of existence.

The Manitoba Electoral Divisions Boundaries Commission has redrawn the electoral boundaries and has dropped the district known as Morris.

The riding is currently represented by Manitoba Progressive Conservative MLA Shannon Martin who was elected in a by-election January of 2014.

"This happens every ten years and it's all done by a non-partisan group, so we as elected officials stay out of it," said Martin. "We'll take a good look at the changes and see what all the numbers mean and what the ridings mean."

According to Elections Manitoba, Morris constituency has been around for a long time. It was created in 1879 and was named after Alexander Morris, who served as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba from 1872 to 1877.

These latest changes to the boundaries will essentially roll most of the Morris electoral district into neighbouring Midland constituency, which is currently represented by Martin's fellow Tory colleague, MLA Blaine Pedersen.

When the next provincial election rolls around in 2020, Martin's physical residence in the community of La Salle will be located in Midland, creating some uncertainty about his political future.

"We'll have to see what happens. It has been an absolute honour ... serving and representing the constituency of Morris. It's a little sad to see the name disappear, but I have no doubt the people who make up the area of Morris will continue to receive good representation from an MLA."

The next provincial election in Manitoba is scheduled for October 6, 2020.
