Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen says the Office of the Superintendent for Financial Institutions, which enforces regulations from the federal government, is making things hard for credit unions and she feels that is a problem.

"This organization has just recently told credit unions that they are prohibited from using terms like 'bank,' 'banker' and 'banking' to describe their service," said Bergen. "This is something that the federal government can very, very easily and very quickly rectify so that credit unions can use these very well-known, very simple terms to describe the services that they provide."

She noted the people of Portage-Lisgar rely on credit unions and are completely against the idea. Bergen says credit unions must be supported for their great work and feels these terms are simple to understand and should be maintained.

Bergen added she understands the large role big banks play in Canada, but says if the truth be known, they simply don't want the competition.
