A Bird Sanctuary may be coming to Winkler.

The Winkler Horticulture Society hopes to develop the city's North East corner at Eastview Drive and PTH 14 into a suitable sanctuary.

"There is a very large variety of bird tracking already happening within the Southern Manitoba community," society Co-Chair Margaret Penner says. "Yet Winkler does not have a specific area for attracting and encouraging bird habitation."

She notes the location already features a dam and a creek which could facilitate recreational fishing as well.

"It's a hidden gem," Penner says.

The society is currently seeking sponsorship for the project, and are looking to partner with A Rocha, Winkler Game and Fish, and Manitoba Ducks Unlimited.

"We have engaged different organizations in conversation and they are willing to come on board," Penner says. "There is a huge birding community here, really we would have a lot of support."

The society made a presentation to Council on February 28, on the possible multi-phase project. Ideas include creating a pathway through the area, installing nesting cages and bird houses and feeders, and planting appropriate trees and shrubs to attract birds.

Parking area and signage would also need to be developed.
