Council for the Municipality of Rhineland is reviewing its Business Tax Incentive bylaw.

Currently, new industrial and commercial businesses that set up in the municipality are given tax breaks for the first four years of operation, excluding special levies and education tax, starting with a 100% rebate in the first year and diminishing by 25% each following year to a maximum of $10,000.

"We still think that basically fits," said Reeve Don Wiebe, but he noted Council is exploring other options that would include extending these tax breaks to existing businesses that are expanding.

"We have a number of businesses that are adding to their shops and so maybe it makes sense, now it's capped at ten thousand dollars, but any incentive or token of appreciation is vital in terms of making our municipality vibrant and growing," added Wiebe.

For now, Council is gathering information on what potential impacts a possible extension would bring and how a revised bylaw look. Wiebe says Council may even enlist some feedback from the newly formed SEED group.

"We'll see how it plays out," he added.
