National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is held every November. Anyone from around the world can sign up and join thousands of other writers who all pledge to write a 50,000 word story.

Angela Lovell is a writer originally from England, and is now settled in Manitou with her husband. She writes as a freelancer for a number of websites, publications, and organizations, but says her love lies in creative writing.

"I am working on a novel right now which I've been working on for quite some time, but it's basically the fictional writing that I enjoy. That's my real passion." Her novel follows a family living on a farm.

Local writer, Angela Lovell, is participating in National Novel Writing Month.

Lovell says she signed up for NaNoWriMo a few years ago, but didn't manage to make any progress, so she decided to give it another shot. Like many other writers, she has had trouble finding the time to sit down and write so she found some new inspiration.

"Interestingly enough, I'm not actually working on my novel for the national novel writing month. I've actually started another project that I thought might sort of inspire me a little bit more because it's something a little bit different. It's actually about a character that I developed for a short-story." The character is an older woman who is very irascible, or easily-angered, and the story falls within the humour vein.

"I'm really having a lot of fun with it. I'm not making a lot of progress - I must admit I should be writing more everyday - but it's definitely a character I'm interested in developing, so I thought maybe this month might be a good idea to just sort of concentrate on that a bit," she adds, saying that month designated to writing can help a writer kick-start their story.

Lovell has also taken a creative writing class at The University of British Columbia, and participated in a writing retreat in Saskatchewan. She it's a wonderful way for writers trying to find new inspiration or motivation.

"As long as you've got people who are like-minded and interested in writing, go for it, because that's the only way you get better, is by writing."
