Winkler City Council has given a proposed nature sanctuary the green light.

"It's an awesome idea," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says. "They've invested their soul into Winkler and it shows. We're so excited about that group and the imagination they have."

A public consolation on the three-phased project is scheduled for June 22 at 7:00 p.m at City Hall.

Chair of the Nature Sanctuary Committee Paul Goossen says they also hope to give the public a chance to choose the sanctuary's name.

Goossen explains the proposed three-phase project will transform the wetlands in the city's Northeast corner.

"It's going to be another jewel in Winkler's crown for tourism attraction," he says.

A network of trails will give visitors a chance to explore the marsh, woodland and wetlands, while an observation deck would provide a vantage point for bird watching and nature photography.

Portions of the trails are expected to be paved for people using mobility aids.

The committee also hopes to be financially independent from the city and will be relying on grants and sponsors.

In-kind support is also greatly appreciated, Goossen says, "that would go a long way."

Currently a budget has not been set for the project.

"We'll just go forward as we can, with what we have," Goossen says.
