Doug Dobrowolski has been appointed as the new chair of Manitoba's Disaster Assistance Appeal Board. Dobrowolski says he was quite pleased to be asked, noting he sat on the board a few years back so he's very familiar with the process. He notes if the province declares a disaster---such as a flood or wind event, for example---people, municipalities and businesses have the opportunity to put in a claim for compensation and those claims are vetted through the Emergency Measures Organization. Dobrowolski says if folks don't like the answer they receive or they disagree with the amount of the compensation, they can appeal their file to the Disaster Assistance Appeal Board.

He adds at that point the board would give them a hearing and then make a decision or whether or not the compensation is adequate or if there are changes that need to be made. Dobrowolski says he's looking forward to his three-year term as board chair and making sure all claims are cleaned up and that people are compensated fairly, noting this kind of work is very rewarding.
