As of Wednesday March 1st, 2017, Manitoban's across the province are able to purchase higher amounts of third party liability insurance coverage through Manitoba Public Insurance. $7-million and $10-million liability coverage options are now available to supplement the $1-million, $2-million and $5-million coverage options already available for most vehicles in the province.

Rental Vehicle Insurance offered by Manitoba Public Insurance will also automatically include the new $10 million liability coverage limit.

"Court judgments in the United States and some Canadian provinces can far exceed Manitoba’s current liability coverage limits," said Media Relations Coordinator Brian Smiley.

Smiley went on to say that the new coverage is not just for those traveling into the US.

"Keep In Mind that it does not matter the frequency, it's just the fact that your are exposed to risk anytime you leave the province. So someone that is going for a brief trip or a once in awhile trip can definitely explore their options, however those that travel out of province regularly are strongly urged to look at the benefits of the increased third party liability coverage," explained Smiley.

Third Party Liability coverage is there to protect Manitoba vehicle owners and drivers in the case they are sued for property damage caused from at-fault motor vehicle collisions, or injuries to other people resulting from collisions outside the province.

In these cases, vehicle owners and drivers could be legally obligated to pay court judgments that exceed the limit of liability coverage carried.
