The Manitou Opera House offered an option beyond music this summer with Wednesday movie nights.

Created two years ago by Manitou Opera House Foundation Treasurer Lindy Sharp, the movie nights were created to entertain children and raise funds for the Opera House’s Accessibility project.

"In the last few years, we have had a massive project," says Sharp. "We built an accessibility wing to the opera house. We are in the process of paying off this addition, as the treasurer I'm motivated to make additional programming."

In 2013 a committee was brought together and decided to make the opera house accessible to everyone. This plan included adding a new wing to the house with wheelchair accessible ramps, and washrooms.

Since the last renovation in 1995, the wing addition was built to emulate the 1930's Heritage style of the original building.

Completed in 2016, the project cost $1.2 million.

Sharp says the Manitou Opera House Foundation has no plans for future projects at the moment, everything they needed to be done has been finished with their priority completely paying for the new wing.

The event held on Wednesday nights in August was available thanks to the sponsorship of Green Valley, Access Credit Union, BSI, and Keen Seeds.

Sharp was very pleased with this years turn out, with an average of 60-70 people coming to watch movies at the Opera House.

"We had a really good response this summer. It was really cute because kids would kick back, they get their popcorn they lay down and watch the movie. It's really cute to see all the kids come out in the pyjamas and they're all excited for the movie."

Thanks to the great response Sharp says the movie nights could become a summer tradition.

The decision to build the accessibility wing began in 2013; the wing was completed in 2016 and cost $1.2 million
