The federal defence critic is upset about a new policy unveiled by the Liberal government, which affects special allowances paid to Canada's elite service people, on top of their regular salary.

Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman MP James Bezan says it impacts JTF-2 Commandos, paratroopers, and submarine crew, among others, who are injured in the line of duty.

He says if their injuries aren't healed within six months, the additional benefits won't be paid.

"That is despicable," he says, "It's adding insult to injury. The real unfortunate part about this is that they may be suffering with mental health and operational stress injuries, and because of the potential loss in pay, they will not seek assistance. And that, to me, is deplorable."

Bezan the decision was made not long ago.

"They made this decision earlier in the fall," he says, "It just came to light during Veterans' Week. And the sad part is most of the injured soldiers are only finding out about it now, and have to retro-actively pay back any extra stipends they received since September 1st."

Bezan accuses the Trudeau government of pinching pennies, to pay for out of control spending, on the backs of Canada's troops.
