The Winkler and District Cheer Board had another successful day Wednesday delivering food hampers to needy families in the area.

Boxes filled with non-perishable food and even a wrapped Christmas gift were transported by large trucks to rural villages by volunteers, while dozens of other volunteers handled deliveries within the city. This year, 325 boxes were assembled, filling the gymnasium of the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church in Winkler.

"Today was a little bit of a scramble because of the weather out there and the road conditions," said public relations chair person, Marilyn Dyck.

Many volunteers with four-by-four and all-wheel-drive vehicles arrived at the church to help bring the food to the intended families, which was a major reason for the organization's success.

"We are so impressed to see all these workers coming out, and they're just eager to help out and make sure these hampers are delivered, hopefully by dark."

Winkler Cheer Board president, Frances Fehr, was looking for just these types of volunteers earlier Wednesday morning to conquer the snowy roads which were just starting to be cleared the same day.

The Cheer Board reaches a massive area: all the way south to the border, and north almost to Carman.

Dozens of volunteers showed up to drive the food hampers around Winkler and to the smaller communities nearby.
