Local Dinosaur-buff, Peter Cantelon, has been chosen to join the board in the Morden Community Development Corporation (MCDC).

The decision was finalized Monday at Morden City Council. Cantelon, who is the executive director of the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre in Morden, was selected because of his background in encouraging tourism to the area, and helping to market the community to people who otherwise wouldn't know Morden existed.

"I've always been a champion for development in Morden, and in the region as a whole. So, it seemed to make sense to me," said Cantelon after he was officially named a board member.

"It'll be a learning opportunity, and I'm looking forward to formalizing some of the development cheerleading I've already been doing."

The corporation, part of the City of Morden, was created to oversee the development of city property and its transition into businesses and other sorts of industry. This is to help ensure the city continues to grow in a responsible fashion while increasing in industrial and commercial property.

The MCDC was established in 1959. Some of the corporation's successes include development and marketing the eastside commercial area located along Highway 3 and the Morden industrial park, and the establishment of an incubator mall through a partnership with MCDC, the City of Morden, and the federal government of Canada. It was also the first organization in Manitoba to provide transitional housing for newcomers to Canada.
