Work to build an age-friendly active living centre in Plum Coulee will start to take shape this month.

Brian Derksen is one of nearly a dozen people that have been trying to make the project a reality since serious discussions began this past winter. He explained the current senior centre on Main Avenue will be torn down mid-September to make way for the new 40' x 80' building, and added that foundation work will begin shortly after that. The hope is to have construction finished in winter.

And while this new facility will replace the old senior centre, Derksen said it will include programs and activities for all ages.

"Plum Coulee has one of the youngest populations in Manitoba," he noted.

Meantime, cost of the project is coming in slightly lower than originally estimated, down from $400,000 to about $320,000.

Derksen admitted that the committee is still a bit short of its fundraising goal, but expects more money to flow in from another round of grants and from pledges.
