Winkler Police officers were commended by Chief Ryan Hunt after successfully negotiating with a male armed with a knife Monday evening.

Officers were called to a local park Monday at 10:30 p.m to locate a male after family members voiced concern for his safety.

Police say the male had made comments that caused his family to worry. Shortly after 10:30 p.m officers located the male in the park near Royal Cres. The male was holding a knife and indicated he wanted to harm himself.

Officers engaged him in conversation and eventually negotiated with him to drop the knife. He was taken in for an assessment by police under the Mental Health Act.

Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt commended officers for their work and for "bringing a very volatile and stressful situation to a successful resolution with no harm to anyone involved."
