Brad Neduzak, Chief of Police for the City of Morden, doled out the commendations at a ceremony Thursday afternoon. The presentation followed a social media post made by Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt days after the incident expressing his pride for the City's officers after two of the four officers involved were from his department.

That morning, Morden constables Canart and Flynn responded to the report of an agitated man in the sanctuary of the church during service, possibly carrying a handgun. Patrol Sergeant Fehr and Constable Marek from the Winkler

Police Service were off-duty, and in the sanctuary when the incident unfolded. Together, the officers worked to evacuate the sanctuary and apprehend the man.

"I'm just thankful, that at the end of the day, everything went the way it did, and everyone is safe. (It was) the best possible outcome," said Cnst. Canart.

Cnst. Flynn said he is appreciative of the recognition.

"For us, sometimes, it doesn't resonate how significant the actions are that we take when we're serving the public. To us, it's the job. You go, you think about it, this is what you do, and in this case, we effected a successful arrest without any further risk to anybody else," he explained. "It's not common that we take time to recognize officers in the community for things like this, it's nice."

Chief Neduzak agrees, adding it is important to acknowledge the good things that local police officers do, and says this particular incident is no exception.

"The actions of these officers, the quick thinking, brought this incident to a very successful and safe conclusion," he praised.

Echoing earlier comments made by Chief Hunt, Neduzak says an officer is never really off-duty, adding the actions of the Winkler police officers in this situation is a perfect example.

"That morning they went to church like any other Sunday, not expecting to be on duty, so to speak, but it just goes to show that in this job the expectation is there," explained Neduzak. "But it's also their commitment and pride in their work to know they may have to jump in at any time, and do whatever it takes to make people safe."
