An organizer with the Winnipeg Supper Club, a popular pop-up restaurant that hosts exclusive impromptu gourmet meals at mysterious locations around the city, is giving back to a local Winkler non-profit.

Former Winkler resident Leane Funk of the Winnipeg Supper Club organized a fundraising pop-up restaurant last weekend with reknowned chef Ben Kramer for a five-course meal at the Winkler Arts and Culture Centre.

Central Station Executive Director Bev Wiebe explains the funding will support their industrial kitchen renovations and related programming at the community centre.

The Food First event raised over $11,000

"Food is the base for a lot of good programming," Wiebe says, noting their free weekly comunity meal and cooking classes are becoming more popular.

"Food is a base for a lot of different things," Wiebe says. "Our goal is to provide dignity, to give people choice, to empower people... anything revolving around food really brings people together and fosters a real sense of community."

She notes sharing a meal at Cafe 545 is also a great place for newcomers to meet new people and get connected in the community.

The pop-up restaurant event took place March 11 and helped raise more than $11,000.
