There is about to be a stronger Co-op presence in the region. Carman-based Homestead Co-op and Portage la Prairie Co-op are proposing an amalgamation.

Jason Rheault is the General Manager for Homestead Co-op, which has locations in Carman, Treherne and La Salle. He said this merger would ensure the competitiveness and existence of both Co-ops well into the future.

"It's the way the world's going I guess. Everyone's joining forces to become stronger and more relevant in their markets and that's the strategy that we're looking for as well," he noted.

Rheault added that a merger with the Portage-based Co-op seemed like a good fit, and noted that the two Co-ops are like-minded and follow the same philosophies.

Portage Co-op General Manager Kevin Dales tells us discussions began in early 2017, and always focused on benefits for members.

"Both retails have the same values," he said, "It was a perfect match between the two retails, and timing was right.

Meantime, Rheault said the move would present stronger opportunities for future growth and offer staff more opportunities to grow within the organization.

"I suppose it opens up opportunities for the pharmacy which we (Homestead) currently operate and Portage doesn't have. On the flip-side of that, they're in the agro-business and we're not," added Rheault.

If the merger is approved, members will be able to use their Co-op numbers in 16 locations, in 7 communities.

Information and voting sessions are set for April 2, 2018 in Carman and April 3, 2018 in Portage la Prairie.

Rheault explained that two-thirds of each membership base needs to vote in favour of the move before it is approved.

If the amalgamation goes through, it will take effect February 3, 2019, under the name Homestead Co-op.
