The R.M. of Dufferin is implementing the Code Red Alert system, joining a handful of other municipalities in the Pembina Valley who already utilize the program.

The APP allows residents to subscribe to localized warnings and advisories issued by area safety officials, and receive the notifications on their home phones or cell phones, including text message and email.

Dufferin Reeve George Gray said the APP will grant municipal staff the ability to alert rate payers quickly about things like boil water advisories, snow clearing operations, and numerous other significant events.

Gray said right now, in the case of a boil water advisory, staff have to go out to hand-deliver notes to residents alerting them of the situation. "Once we get it up and running, by e-mail, by phone, by text, the CodeRed people will automatically send out a notification for us.  It will save us nothing but time and money, and free up our staff for the things they are doing."

"The program has the dynamic of a lot of expansion to the benefits of the rate payer," added Gray. "You can spin it off to snow plowing...all sorts of significant events."

Gray said although it will likely take a full year before the program is fully operational for Dufferin, they've already begun the process of collecting the needed information to add people to the system.  He said residents can help speed up the process by contacting the R.M. office to notify them of their preferred way of being alerted.
