RCMP want people to use caution both on their phones and computers.

Police in Killarney have received a report of fraud in that community where a bank account was compromised. RCMP report that about $80,000 was taken from the account and prepaid credit cards were purchased.

Police continue to investigate that specific case.

“We've tried to communicate to people that if it's not something you specifically asked for and emails are being sent to you at random or people are contacting you at random on the telephone be suspicious of those calls” said Killarney Area Detachment commander Sergeant Jarrid ST-Pierre.

He adds if you get an email that you are not familiar with don't open it because often there are trojan horse inside these emails that can gain control of your computer and that is how identity theft happens.

“Once they have your computer they can get access to your banking information and all kinds of sensitive things about you and they can steal from you.”

ST-Pierre says be suspicious and report things to the local RCMP or the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre and further investigations will take place.

Police continue to remind area residents about fraud and there are still people being victimized. So police urge you to be on guard and take steps to protect yourself, your bank accounts and identity.
