A Winkler man neglected to delete video evidence of his crime during an elaborate attempt to cover his tracks this weekend.

On September 23, the 35-year-old-male was doing burnouts in Winkler's industrial area when he lost control of his van, crashing into a pedestrian crosswalk light.

However, rather than face the consequences he reported his van stolen, claiming he left the keys in the unlocked vehicle.

Shortly after receiving the complaint Winkler police were notified of an abandoned van matching the description crashed in front of Lode King Industries.

However, after searching the vehicle the police discovered the man's cell phone which contained video of the man doing burnouts and losing control of the vehicle.

The following morning, the man contacted police admitting his lie. He was arrested and charged with public mischief, mischief over $5,000, and issued tickets for driving imprudently and leaving the scene of the accident.

He was released on a promise to appear.
