The intersection on Thornhill St. directly outside of Maple Leaf Elementary School in Morden continues to be a dangerous place for people to cross.

Crossing guards are in place during the morning, lunch hour, and after school to ensure students can cross the street safely, but regularly after the guards leave the intersection, drivers proceed through it, even if the traffic light about them is still red.

The intersection is unfortunately in a major trucking route and a busy commuter route

"We've worked with the crossing guards and Maple Leaf School," said Police Chief Brad Neduzak, "We continue to get motorists that, I think, are a little confused by what exactly the lights at that intersection are."

A month ago in late-October, three pylons with signs indicating traffic lights above were gifted to Maple Leaf School by the Morden Community Thrift Store. The pylons were meant to direct drivers' attention up to the lights at the intersection, but Neduzak and crossing guards at the school both say it hasn't eliminated the problem.

"You have to obey the lights," said Neduzak, "If there's a red light, and the crossing guards are crossing students, after they are done, the motorists still have to remain until the light turns green."

"It's a traffic light, and I think people are getting it confused with a pedestrian corridor."

The Morden Police received 40 complaints last year about drivers rolling through red lights at the intersection. Crossing guards, teachers and parents, inform the police when the infraction occurs. A report is filled out which allows officers to follow up with drivers.
