Grade 12 Northlands Parkway Collegiate student Owen Wiebe had lofty aspirations for his grad date.

Wiebe recently reached out to national Canadian sports broadcaster Natasha Staniszewski on Twitter, asking her about the possibility of being his grad date. To his surprise, she said yes.

However, the date came with the condition his request reach 500 shares or retweets.

He turned back to twitter for help.

To his added surprise his post started gaining traction and was eventually retweeted more than 530 times.

"It just snowballed, everyone was seeing it... they knew who she was and so everybody wanted to see it happen," he says. "I was pretty surprised the whole day, everybody at school was pretty pumped. It was pretty awesome."

However, Staniszewski later messaged Wiebe with heartbreaking news after realizing the distance between them.

While disappointed, Wiebe says it was encouraging to see the support from across the region.

"People would've been excited to see her," he says, adding it would've been a lot of fun taking pictures and dancing.

"I loved the support from everybody, I just wish she actually would've been able to come out, it would've been a lot of fun," he says. "It would've been pretty cool, because she's pretty popular."

Looking ahead, he admits his eventual grad date will have large shoes to fill, "she was my number one choice that's for sure... but I have some time to decide that."
