Retired Winnipeg Police Chief Devon Clunis has been hired to review and assess the Winkler Police Department, as well as the Morden Police Department.

Clunis has already begun the review, which will continue over the next 90 daysClunis, now working as an independent consultant, was hired for the credibility of his work, Winkler Police Board Chair Henry Siemens explains.

"He gives us instant credibility with our service, he gives us instant credibility within our community," says Siemens. "He's somebody who's known and respected in Manitoba Policing circles, and the Manitoba community at large."

Siemens says over the last 15 years Winkler has doubled in population, while structurally and organizationally the Police Department hasn't changed.

With a number of senior Police staff having recently retired, the Winkler Police Board wanted someone to look at the department objectively to find what is working, and what isn't.

"As we're looking at some of these things, we wanted to make sure we support our members appropriately, and that we support our community appropriately. That we're staying ahead of the curve in terms of modern policing."

The Board has also been working alongside the Morden Police board to determine if there are services both cities can work together to provide.

The review has already begun and will continue over the next 90 days.
