Model aircraft machines took over the sky north of Winkler on Saturday as part of the Winkler Wings R/C Flying Club's Fun Fly event.

Members of the club put on a show for spectators as they flew their model planes, helicopters, and drones across the countryside.

Co-organizer Jon Loeppky said, while the event is for fun, it's also to demonstrate responsibility and safety when it comes to flying model aircraft as to not ruin the enjoyment for other flyers.

"Right now the main concern [are] drones; flying where they aren't supposed to fly around the neighbourhood or around an international airport ... that's not very smart of the ones doing it, but they ruin it for everyone," he said.

Loeppky noted that since the club is part of the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada, it is exempt from some of the rules such as flying a certain distance away from any airport. He said, however, the club would like to practise smart flying, so they're willing to respect the rules depsite the expemption.

"We try to be safe, but still make it fun," he said.
