Mountains of snow can be seen on several streets in Altona as town crews continue to clear streets today. The Colorado low dumped several inches of heavy, wet snow across our region on Sunday and Monday.

Altona Public Works Manager, Clint Derksen, says his crews are making good progress.

"Yesterday we got all of the northeast done with a single path, but then it kept snowing, so we've moved into the northwest and are going to leave the northeast section for now since it has considerably less snow and we'll try to work

Area highways remained snowpacked for the Tuesday morning commute. Submitted photo.our way through the town before we polish everything up and get it looking nice."

Derksen says crews should be able to finish off a quarter of the town each day and should have things close to normal sometime on Friday.

Residents of Altona are asked to avoid parking their vehicles on streets to allow crews easy access in clearing streets quickly.

Meantime, Craig Smiley, Public Works Director for the Municipality of Rhineland hopes to have rural roads in the area cleared of snow by 7 PM Tuesday.

"The roads are pretty heavy. I would say some places have anywhere from twelve to sixteen inches of snow on them," he said.

Smiley is reminding motorists to use caution and stay out of the way of any oncoming plows and graders they may encounter while travelling on rural roads.

Brian Wiebe, Sub-Foreman for Town of Morris Public Works said snow removal in Morris is 50 per cent complete right now.

"We're just over half way done, we did start early this morning to try and get as much done before traffic started flowing," Wiebe explained.

He adds it's going well, but taking longer than expected due to the heavy amount of snowfall.

"We are hoping that within the next 24-48 hours we'll be completely done the entire town," said Wiebe. "We've run into some issues so far with parked vehicles, unfortunately that's just the nature of the job."

He noted it wasn't completely unexpected for the public works team to clear this amount of snow in March.

"It's Manitoba, so you've got to expect that you're going to get some spring snowstorms."

Workers have also been up early working to clear up the Rural Municipality of Montcalm. Mike Kuntz, Public Works Assistant Manager, said most towns in the RM are cleared and operators are now working on gravel roads.
