A driver received a hefty fine last week after going twice the speed limit in a school zone.

On March 6, police observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in a school zone on Roblin Blvd. and obtained a reading of 62 km/h in a 30 km/h zone. Police conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver of the vehicle a ticket for speeding, which carried a fine of $469.

Below is the Winkler Police Report for March 4-10:

March 4 – A male reported a possible fraud involving the online sale of a vehicle. The male provided personal information to the online seller and signed a purchase agreement. The male was advised that the vehicle was on an army base and not available for viewing, but after the purchase the male would have five days to inspect the vehicle, which would then be shipped to his location by a shipping service. The male attended his bank to arrange for payment and was advised that this was likely a fraud and to report the matter to police. The male did not send any money to the fraudster and was advised by police to cease all contact.

A male reported that he received a letter and telephone call from a collection service advising that he owed approximately $500 to his cell phone service provider, but the collection service would accept a payment of approximately $300 to forgive the debt. The male contacted his cell phone service provider who advised that he did not have any outstanding amount on his bill, and police advised the male to not send any money as this was likely a scam.

A female reported that her two adult sons attended her residence, damaged multiple items of property inside her home and threatened her. This investigation is ongoing.

March 6 – Police were dispatched to a residence to assist a female with the removal of her ex-boyfriend. Police attended, assisted in mediating the situation, and the male was picked up from the residence by his father.

March 7 – At approximately 9:30 p.m. a report was received of several suspicious individuals entering a “Staff Only” door located inside a local store. Police attended and confirmed the individuals to be maintenance workers who were accompanied by the owner of the business.

March 8 - Police were dispatched to a residence regarding a female who was possibly in distress. Police spoke with the female who advised she and her boyfriend had a verbal argument and no physical assault had taken place. While on scene police learned there was a warrant from another agency for the female’s arrest. The 20 year old female was arrested on the strength of the warrant and later released on a Promise to Appear.

March 9 – Shortly before 12:00 a.m. a complaint was received of loud music and doors slamming inside a residence. Police attended and advised the resident keep the noise down.

A report was received advising of a male who had possibly overdosed on cocaine. Police attended the male’s residence and observed him to be highly intoxicated. The male advised police he had consumed a large amount of liquor and had also used cocaine. The 30 year old male was arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and transported to the Winkler Police Service. Paramedics were also contacted and transported the male to the hospital for assessment, during which time he was medically cleared and transported back to the Winkler Police Service, where he was lodged until sober.

Police received a complaint of fighting and screaming that could be heard inside a residence and were advised shortly thereafter that the individuals had since left the residence. Police attended and located the individuals who advised that they had been having a verbal argument and no assault had taken place.

A complaint was received regarding an unwanted intoxicated male inside a residence. Police attended the residence and advised the male he was not welcome inside the home. While speaking with the male police noted the strong odour of liquor on the male’s breath, and were aware that the male was under conditions to abstain from consuming alcohol. The 25 year old male was arrested for Breaching an Undertaking and released once sober on a Promise to Appear.

March 10 – Staff of a local gas station reported a theft of gas that occurred on March 8th involving a female who claimed to have forgotten her purse at home. The female advised that she would immediately come back to pay for the gas, but never returned. Staff obtained a picture of the vehicle and upon querying the licence plate police learned the vehicle was reported stolen from another city. This investigation is ongoing.
